About Corlett Solutions
The founder of Corlett Solutions, Steve Corlett, has had a diverse career. He launched his accounting practice with “side jobs” in the 1980’s, while gaining work experience over 22 years with diverse employers that included a small consulting practice, a large hospital, a major public accounting firm, a growing church and school, and a multi-state distributor. As time went on, those who knew his work continued to refer contract and consulting work, and in 2001, he transitioned from full time employment to running his own full time accounting practice. In 2004, he began providing services under the name, “Corlett Solutions,” moved into an office outside the home, hired employees, started marketing efforts, and otherwise tackled the multitude of tasks to support what he does best, providing accounting and general financial expertise to small businesses.
Clients and colleagues have often said that Steve does not seem like a typical accountant. His services do not include income tax preparation, audits, or valuation. He often functions as part of a company’s staff; while providing basic accounting and bookkeeping services on an outsourced, contract basis, he often comes over time to feel like an insider to the owner and other employees. His goals are to keep a business’s accounting records correct and under control, to be able to provide necessary year-end reports and data for the client’s CPA to prepare annual tax returns, and to provide useful, relevant information to help business owners run their business, and to do so on an affordable basis.
Many clients do not need more than basic accounting and bookkeeping, but for those companies whose operations are larger or more complex, Steve can function as an independent controller or CFO. In that capacity, he can put into place financial systems, help with software implementations, prepare special financial analyses, projections, and reports, and represent management to bankers, business partners, and other outsiders, in a professional manner.
Steve’s Vision for Accounting is that it should be much more than a necessary evil or the repetitive processing of the same tasks each month on auto-pilot. Instead, it must provide useful information to the owner, be an active support service for the company as a whole, and help pay for itself in whole or part through efficiencies, cost savings, and revenue enhancement.
